Key Characters:

Growth Form: Erect, glabrous trees or shrubs with milky sap and pale–colored bark.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Leaves in whorls of 3–5 per node. Petiolate, sometimes with petiolar glands. Stipules (small and deciduous) together with persistent glands in the leaf axils.

Flowers: Flowers in terminal or lateral compound cymes. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx campanulate, 5-lobed, the lobes imbricate. Corolla usually white, salverform to campanulate. Stamens 5, inserted on the corolla tube opposite the lobes. Ovary superior, 2, distinct to variously connate; ovules 1–2 per ovary; style filiform.

Fruit: Fruit of 2 distinct to variously connate drupes; rarely only 1 developing. Seeds 1 per ovary.
